Main break floods 100 Qns. homes

- Ryan Sit

AN ELDERLY woman was hospitalized after a busted water main sent thousands of gallons of water pouring into the street, flooding homes in Queens early Saturday, officials and residents said.

The flooding impacted about 100 homes, according to the FDNY, and cracked slabs of sidewalk on 23rd St. near 24th Dr. in Astoria.

“It was chaos — a total deluge,” said Zach Borst, 29, who lives on the street. “It was so powerful. The water shot back and flooded all the backyards.”

Emergency responders brought the woman to Elmhurst Hospital as a precaution after her home filled with about 3 feet of water, neighbors and officials said.

The busted main let loose a torrent for about two hours until the water was shut off about 6:30 a.m.

“It was like a river, an angry river,” said Angela Panagiotou, 63. “The sidewalk just collapsed.”

Officials from the Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross were on scene Saturday morning as firefighters pumped water out of flooded basements.
