Flag honors for war hero
FLAGS at state office buildings across New York will fly at halfstaff Monday to honor a Brooklyn soldier whose remains were identified more than 60 years after he disappeared in South Korea.
Army Pfc. Anthony La Rossa was apparently captured following an attack by Chinese forces in 1951. He was reported missing two days after the mission, but his whereabouts remained a mystery.
North Korea eventually turned over his remains to the U.S. in the 1990s, but he was only recently identified. The 18-year-old is believed to have died in captivity.
“After far too many years unaccounted for, Pfc. La Rossa has finally come home,” said Gov. Cuomo, who ordered the flags be lowered Monday when La Rossa is buried in Farmingdale, L.I.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of all service members who remain unaccounted for,” Cuomo added.
