Fine ‘Jackie’ gets another shot

- DAVID HINCKLEY TV CRITIC

THE STAKES rise and the drama intensifies as Nurse Jackie starts her final run at putting her life in some semblance of order.

But the odds frankly don’t look good for Jackie Peyton (Edie Falco, l.), who has a whole lot of stuff that needs a whole lot of fixing. At the end of last season Jackie was busted trying to leave town with a stash of medication. This puts her in a bad spot with her boss Gloria Akalitus (Anna Deavere

Smith), who for a long time helped and defended her.

Jackie’s addiction has cost her several friends, not to mention husband Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) and maybe her kids.

One of the few who has stuck with her all along, Eddie (Paul Schulze), is on board again, though she has once again put him and his career in jeopardy as well.

In this last season, Jackie faces both prosecution and the loss of her job, which she correctly notes has been pretty much the only thread holding her life together.

Facing multiple crises, she concocts a risky strategy that could fix the immediate part of the problem. Or not.

Meanwhile, the plucky Zoey (Merritt Wever) is making some moves of her own, while Carrie Roman (Betty Gilpin) and Coop (Peter Facinelli) have to figure out their next move, now that Carrie’s told him she’s pregnant.

So there are enough side dishes to keep things lively. But Jackie, as always, is the main course. We know she’s a great nurse. Now we may learn whether she can be even adequate at everything

else.
