Bulls tie in D.C.

Get goal from Sam in 90th minute

-

WASHINGTON — Lloyd Sam scored in the 90th minute and the Red Bulls tied D.C. United, 2-2, on Saturday night. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid blocked Sacha Kljestan’s free kick, but the ball squirted away and Sam beat his defender to the loose ball for the equalizer.

Perry Kitchen gave United (31-1) a 1-0 lead after heading Taylor Kemp’s 26th-minute corner kick off the post and into the net. In the 67th minute, Chris Rolfe navigated through New York’s defense and found Kitchen, who took one touch and drilled a shot for a 2-0 lead.

The Red Bulls (2-0-2) answered a minute later when Damien Perrinelle headed in Felipe’s corner kick for his first MLS goal.

“We’ve been tested this season so far. But certainly when you dig a hole, like two-zero down on the road, that really tests you and you find out a lot about your guys,” Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch said. “Certainly the fact they responded right away by getting a goal I think that was important because it gave the game a chance.”

Luis Silva’s free kick in the 76th minute was headed away at the goal line by Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty.

YEDLIN DEBUTS

DeAndre Yedlin, a U.S. national team hero of the 2014 World Cup, finally made his English Premier League debut for Tottenham Hotspur, albeit in the final minutes of a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa and U.S. teammate Brad Guzan. Yedlin completed 3 of 3 passes and made one tackle after coming on in the 79th minute in place of Vlad Chiriches.

“Obviously, it's unbelievable to make my debut here,” Yedlin said on SpursTV. “It's something I've looked forward to for a while now. But the circumstances weren’t the best. It's disappointing, lost the three points. We're going to have to come back and get those points back.”

The loss means Tottenham (54 points) dropped to seventh place after Southampton (56) leapt over them with a 2-0 win over Hull City. Liverpool (also 54 points) has a game in hand before playing host to Newcastle United on Monday.

Yedlin was sold to Tottenham last January after helping the Seattle Sounders win the MLS Supporters’ Shield and the U.S. Open Cup following a sparkling run coming off the bench for the U.S. at the World Cup in Brazil last summer.

Yedlin received a warm welcome from the supporters at White Hart Lane when he came onto the pitch.

“It was great to run out to,” he said. “I never thought I'd get that kind of support coming over here, so it was really great to see and hear.”

Since arriving in London, Yedlin had been playing with Tottenham’s U21 team before right back Kyle Walker injured his foot.

Christian Benteke scored in the first half for Aston Villa, lifting his team further away from the relegation zone and giving manager Tim Sherwood a victory at his former club. The win lifts 15th-place Villa to 32 points from 33 games, six points clear of the relegation zone. Tottenham is seven points outside the top four.

Villa had Carlos Sanchez sent off for his second booking in injury time.
