MTV GOES TO THE MOVIES

‘Fault in Our Stars’ takes top honor

- JOE NEUMAIER

THE 2015 MTV Movie Awards rolled into the end of the awards season with Amy Schumer hosting, Vin Diesel crooning and movie fans rocking out to this equivalent of the cleaning truck motoring in after the parade.

These awards, though, do represent a certain kind of fan voice, as they’re voted for online from a list of finalists provided by MTV. Goofy as they are, they can have a refreshing candor as celebs get even more loosey-goosey than they do at the Golden Globes.

“The Fault in Our Stars” won Movie of the Year. The author of the book, John Green, said the cast and filmmakers were “a gift to my life.

Earlier in the evening, Shailene Woodley won Best Female Performance for “Fault.” She dedicated her award to Green, whose words, she said, “will transcend time. ... You changed my life.”

The movie was a fave in the youth heavy room, as Woodley and “Fault” costar Ansel Elgort won Best Kiss.

The two also played siblings in the “Divergent” franchise.

“If you guys ever wondered what it’s like to kiss your brother — it’s kind of great!” joked Woodley.

Best Male Performance went to Bradley Cooper for his turn as military marksman Chris Kyle in “American Sniper.”

Holding his Golden Popcorn award, Cooper said with earnestness, “I want to say to the fans, it’s because of you, you brought awareness to the men and women in the military and what they did by loving the film.

“Chris Kyle would have turned 41 four days ago. Chris, this is for you.”

Kyle was shot by a fellow veteran in 2013, before “Sniper” had started filming.

Jennifer Lopez accepted the honor for Best SCARED-ASS--MOMENT for “The Boy Next Door.” Best Shirtless Performance went to Zac Efron for “Neighbors.” The competition for that one was stiff: Kate Upton (“The Other Woman”), Chris Pratt (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Channing Tatum (“Foxcatcher”) and Elgort (“The Fault In Our Stars”).

Best Duo went to Efron and Dave Franco, who played goofball frat bros in “Neighbors.” Efron showed up in a faux-hawk à la Robert De Niro in “Taxi Driver,” a movie made 11 years before he was born.

Best Hero went to newcomer Dylan O’Brien (“The Maze Runner”), who beat out action competition Woodley, Jennifer Lawrence (“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1”), Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”) and Pratt (“Guardians of the Galaxy”).

O’Brien also won Best Fight, for his battle against co-star Will Poulter in “The Maze Runner.”

The New York-born O’Brien made it a three-fer as he took the Breakthrough Performance award. Best Musical Moment was unexpected: Lawrence won for that paragon of song, “Mockingjay.”

Best Onscreen Transformation went to Elizabeth Banks for her portrayal of Effie Trinket in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1.” Best WTF Moment went to Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne for “Neighbors.”

Channing Tatum (“22 Jump Street”) won for Best Comedic Performance.

“I just got to hang out with my buddy Jonah (Hill),” said Tatum, looking jaunty in a goatee

and tweedy, jellyfish-looking cap, “so, thanks.”

The Best Villain honor went to Meryl Streep for “Into the Woods.”

MTV Generation Award winner Robert Downey Jr. got his honor from his “Avengers: Age of Ultron” co-stars Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo.

“When the first (MTV) Trailblazer award was given out in 2005, I thought, ‘Where’s mine?’ ” quipped Downey. “I waited 10 long years!

“If a man is judged by the company he keeps, than I must be doin’ all right, because look who I’m rolling with,” he said, gesturing to his “Avengers” pals, who were kneeling on the floor beside him in mock subservience.

Kevin Hart got the Comedic Genius award. His latest, “Get Hard,” has a 29% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

MTV Trailblazer winner Woodley later got a heartfelt salute from frequent co-star Miles Teller, who praised her “positive energy.”

“We can’t be ourselves without a community,” said Woodley, who marveled at the people “who become our community. ... Whoever your community is, be a pillar for those people.”
