Manholes blow, start 3 car fires
A QUIET Saturday morning turned disastrous for residents of one Queens block when three manhole explosions set three parked cars on fire, officials said.
Firefighters were called to Metropolitan and 69th Aves. in Forest Hills after the 6:30 a.m. explosions rocked the sleepy street.
Residents in six buildings were temporarily left without power, which was set to return Saturday evening. No injuries were reported. Con Edison was investigating the cause of the manhole explosions. Typically, manhole explosions are caused by cables that corrode due to salt sprinkled on the streets during winter and then catch fire.
