Shocker by defense in cop shoot
THE DEFENSE attorney representing a man on trial for the shooting of an NYPD sergeant in 2012 accused the hero cop of shooting himself on Monday.
Sgt. Craig Bier had testified that the man who shot him in Queens on Aug. 8, 2012, was John Thomas, 27.
But Thomas’ lawyer — and godmother — Ikiesha Al-Shabazz shocked court observers with a pointed line of questioning during her cross-examination.
“Were you upset because you shot yourself?” she asked.
The judge struck the comment from the record after prosecutor Neil Fenton objected.
Many in the courtroom shook their heads in disbelief.
But Shabazz defended the outrageous remark to the Daily News.
“I had a good-faith basis to ask him,” she insisted. “Secondly, I have no confidence in the integrity of this (case’s) evidence.”
