Life term in tenant slay

- Christina Carrega-Woodby

A BROOKLYN landlord was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison on Monday for killing one of his tenants and attacking another.

Phillip Estevez pulled a gun when he confronted Luis Martinez about three months of unpaid rent in March 2013.

“Phillip, you should have listened to Luis when he told you not to do something you’d regret for the rest of your life and you shot him. That’s why you’re there,” said Martinez’s partner, Carmen Rodriguez, as she wiped away tears during her impact statement to the court.

Estevez, 65, owned 566 Shepherd Ave. in East New York and rented rooms to Martinez, 51, and to Ana Rodriguez and her family.

He was convicted of shooting Martinez, and then attacking Rodriguez and her 12-year-old daughter with a pipe.

“It’s sad. A life was taken and yours is over as well, but that was your choice,” Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Albert Tomei said.
