Cosmos beat Cuba in friendly

The Cosmos defeated the Cuba national team, 4-1, in a friendly in Havana during the first visit to the island by a U.S. profession­al team since the two countries began their detente effort in December.

Lucky Mksona had two goals, and Sebastian Guenzatti and Hagop Chirishian also scored.

l Rubio Rubin scored twice and Emerson Hyndman and Paul Arriola also scored and the United States routed host New Zealand, 4-0, to become the first team to reach the second round of the Under-20 World Cup.

CAM’S BIG DEAL

QB Cam Newton has agreed to a franchise record $103.8 million, five-year contract extension with the Carolina Panthers. Newton, 26, will earn $67.6 million over the first three years, the most money ever paid to an NFL player during the first three years of a contract, said a person familiar with negotiatio­ns.

SKAPSKI SURGERY

Rangers goaltender Mackenzie Skapski has had surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip and is expected to be sidelined four to five months. Skapski, 20, won both his starts backing up Cam Talbot after Henrik Lundqvist got hurt.
