Putting a price tag on Garner’s life

-

Manhattan: While I deeply regret the untimely death of anyone, an award the magnitude of that negotiated after Eric Garner’s death goes beyond the pale. Garner had been arrested many times for selling loose cigarettes and so clearly knew the drill when an arrest was imminent. The video shows that he was resisting the lawful attempt by police to arrest. Had he complied, he would no doubt have been alive and back on the street before the arrest paperwork was completed. Could the entire incident have been handled better? Absolutely. Should city taxpayers pay out $5.9 million without a full trial? Absolutely not. John Ost

Manhattan: It’s nice that the Daily News tries to present varied viewpoints, but you really don’t need to post comments that are false just to remind us there are many scary and ignorant people out there. Voicer David Hammer claims the Garner family had its day in court and lost, but that’s factually false. Daniel Pantaleo was “prosecuted” by his own teammate, then-District Attorney Dan Donovan, a Republican who had previously boasted that he supports cops, wrong or right. There are many Americans like Hammer, who despise the Bill of Rights and especially its equal protection and due process clauses. They are the ones who don’t care about law. Even the NYPD said Pantaleo and his partners falsified police reports, as the video proved. Donovan didn’t need any grand jury to arrest these dirty cops, because falsifying police reports is a misdemeanor, not a felony. Is there an honest DA or attorney general in this nation? I don’t think so. Janice Amato
