Liberty eclipses the Sun

Tina Charles had 22 points and 12 rebounds for her sixth doubledoub­le and the Liberty beat Connecticu­t, 64-57, at the Garden Thursday night to extend the Sun’s losing streak to five games.

Epiphanny Prince added 10 points for the Liberty (9-5) while Kiah Stokes had seven points, eight rebounds and eight blocks — breaking the franchise record of six.

SERENA WITHDRAWS

Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Swedish Open, citing a right elbow injury. Tournament spokesman Marcus Duner says the topranked Williams was injured while practicing Thursday. He had no immediate details on the injury.

WORRELL SETS PAN-AM MARK

Kelsi Worrell, a native of Mount Holly, N.J., set a Pan American Games record in the 100m butterfly heat with a 57.24 in Toronto Thursday. She topped Claire Donahue’s previous Pan Am Games record of 58.59 by over a second. It’s also the third-fastest time in the world this season. Worrell later won the gold the final in a time of 57.78.

MBAH A MOUTE DEAL VOIDED

The Sacramento Kings voided the contract of forward Luc Mbah a Moute after he failed a team physical.The Kings also announced that Willie Cauley-Stein, the sixth pick of this year’s draft, signed his rookie deal. Terms were not disclosed.

The Clippers signed freeagent forward Josh Smith, who helped eliminate them in the playoffs with the Houston Rockets last season. Smith reportedly signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum worth $1.5 million.

Nets coach Lionel Hollins will coach Team World and Nets GM Billy Hunter will be GM for Team Africa in the NBA’s first game on the continent. The Aug. 1 game will be played in Johannesbu­rg and televised live on ESPN. Team Africa features players born in Africa or second-generation Africans.

URUGUAY LEGEND DIES

Alcides Edgardo Ghiggia, the Uruguayan soccer great who scored the late winning goal in a stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil in the 1950 World Cup final, has died. He was 88. The secretary general of the Uruguayan Football Associatio­n, Alejandro Balbi, announced that Ghiggia died Thursday. He did not give a cause of death.
