Fans boo Geno at MetLife

- BY KEVIN ARMSTRONG

THE BOO BIRDS were in midseason form at the Jets’ annual Green and White scrimmage Saturday night.

Geno Smith completed his ninth consecutive practice without throwing an interception, but he was sacked and had the ball stripped. He threw enough incompletions to draw the ire of a crowd that filled half the lower bowl of MetLife Stadium. He rebounded to find wideout Brandon Marshall for a 35-yard touchdown, and maintained that he was smiling when the fans voiced their displeasure early on.

“I had a big smile on my face,” Smith said. “You would have thought we were on the road tonight. In two years I think I’ve developed some really tough skin.”

The offense started slowly. Smith was sacked on the first play from scrimmage, and then connected on short screen passes. He later found Eric Decker down the right side before overthrowing Marshall.

Fans booed Smith’s miscues. His fumble was his second turnover of training camp. He still has not thrown an interception, and found Marshall for a second touchdown when Marshall broke inside for a quick slant on cornerback Darrelle Revis for a one-yard score.

“I’ve gotta do a better job of running better routes in the dog days of camp, make sure I am at the right place for him, make it easier for Geno,” said Marshall, whose name was chanted by fans.

The boos and touchdowns came on a night when the team played in a game-like atmosphere for the first time. The public address announcer offered a special greeting to Revis and Antonio Cromartie, who ran on the field together. They were the last to be introduced. It was Revis’ first appearance on site as a Jet since 2012.

Fans did not get to see the full roster. Defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson (hamstring), WR Shaq Evans (ribs) and WR Chris Owusu (head) did not practice. It was the fifth consecutive practice that Wilkerson missed. Cornerbacks Curtis Brown and Keith Lewis also sat out with injuries.

Head coach Todd Bowles’ plan heading in was to limit hitting to potential goal-line work. The Jets will get their first game action Thursday night against Detroit. They are scheduled to practice again Monday after taking Sunday off.

For one night in August, Marshall believed his team learned some things.

“Great crowd, but also it can be tough,” Marshall said. “We’ve just go to do our job to keep them happy.”
