For openers, Jameis a dud
MINNEAPOLIS — Jameis Winston’s pro debut got off to a brutal start.
Winston, this year’s top overall draft pick, played the entire first half of the Buccaneers’ 26-16 loss to the Vikings, finishing 9 for 19 for 131 yards. The former Florida State star had a pass intercepted by Antone Exum, mishandled two snaps that led to a total of 19 lost yards and threw several passes well off target.
“You have to have a first game,” said Tampa Bay coach Lovie Smith. “You have to work on some of those things, and that’s what he’s doing.”
The majority of Winston’s completions came in the second quarter when the Vikings had their backups in on defense.
The brighter side for Winston and the Buccaneers included a 40-yard completion to Vincent Jackson with Vikings rookie cornerback Trae Waynes in coverage, and an 8-yard touchdown run after the pocket collapsed around him on third down.
“I have so much confidence in this kid,” Jackson said. “I think he’s going to have a great year. He’s just so smart. He’s picked up everything fast, and he sees things on the field that a veteran sees. It’s a lot of fun playing with him.”
For the Vikings, Teddy Bridgewater went 7 for 8 for 86 yards.
CHARGERS: Quarterback Philip Rivers and San Diego struck a deal for a four-year contract extension. Financial details weren’t immediately available.
ESPN reported the deal is a four-year extension worth $83.25 million with $65 million guaranteed.
BEARS: Wide receiver Kevin White will have surgery on his left shin to repair a stress fracture and will start the regular season on the physically unable to perform list.
CARDINALS: A person with knowledge of the situation says running back Chris Johnson will visit Arizona on Sunday to undergo a physical. Johnson, who turns 30 next month, rushed for a career-low 663 yards with the Jets last season. —AP
