Lukaku’s good karma lifts Everton over Saints

-

SOUTHAMPTON, England — Romelu Lukaku found his range after a pre-game mishap to score twice in Everton’s 3-0 win at Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Belgium striker went into the crowd, apologized to and hugged a female Southampton fan for hitting her with a wild shot during the warmup.

Lukaku was more precise when the game started, putting Everton in front in the 22nd minute when he headed in Arouna Kone’s cross on a counter-attack.

Lukaku then exchanged passes with Ross Barkley before shooting home from the edge of the area in the 44th to make it, 2-0.

Barkley sealed an impressive team display by Everton — and its first win of the season — with the third in the 84th after a sweeping move involving Lukaku and Seamus Coleman.

TOTTENHAM 2, STOKE 2: Stoke scored twice in the final 12 minutes to salvage a draw at Tottenham, keeping both teams without a win after two rounds this season. Marko Arnautovic converted a 78th-minute penalty to get Stoke back into the game after conceding twice in the first half, before Mame Biram Diouf turned in substitute Stephen Ireland’s cross in the 83rd. Spurs looked like bouncing back from a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United last weekend when Eric Dier rose above two markers to meet Christian Eriksen’s corner with a near-post header in the 19th minute. Nacer Chadli made it 2-0 in stoppage time, volleying in a deep cross by Ben Davies.

LEICESTER 2, WEST HAM 1: Leicester kept up its strong start to the Premier League season by beating host West Ham for its second straight win. Japan striker Shinji Okazaki scored his first league goal for the club in the 27th minute and Riyad Mahrez doubled the visitors’ lead in the 38th. It was Mahrez’s third goal in two games.

SWANSEA 2, NEWCASTLE 0: Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew both scored for the second straight game as host Swansea comfortably saw off 10-man Newcastle.

NORWICH 3, SUNDERLAND 1: Sunderland lost its second straight Premier League game of the season, this time at home by newly promoted Norwich at the Stadium of Light. Russell Martin put Norwich ahead in the 26th from close range and Steven Whittaker made it 2-0 with a shot to the bottom left corner 11 minutes later as Sunderland’s defense again struggled.

WATFORD 0, WEST BROM 0: Premier League newcomer Watford earned its second straight draw to start the season after being held scoreless by visiting West Bromwich Albion.
