Nats fall in San Fran, dive at 5

SAN FRANCISCO — The Nationals were unable to pick up ground on the Mets as Gio Gonzalez (9-5) got roughed up in a six-run third inning en route to a 12-6 loss to the Giants.

Washington scored single runs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead but were unable to stop its losing streak, which reached five games.

Gonzalez was charged with six runs on five hits and two walks in 22/3 innings. The first six Giants reached in the third inning, which included Matt Duffy’s bases-loaded clearing double.

D-BACKS 8, BRAVES 4: Patrick Corbin continued to gain momentum in his return from Tommy John surgery, allowing just three hits and no runs while pitching into the seventh inning to lift visiting Arizona. David Peralta drove in three runs on two hits, including a fourth-inning homer off Mike Foltynewic­z (4-4).

BREWERS 3, PHILLIES 2: In Milwaukee, Scooter Gennett had a career-high four hits and Jimmy Nelson pitched into the seventh inning. Gennett had four singles in four at-bats, drove in two runs and scored the tie-breaking run on Jean Segura’s hit in the seventh.

CARDINALS 6, MARLINS 2: John Lackey was dominant into the ninth inning and gave host St. Louis an unexpected bonus with two hits and an RBI. Mark Reynolds’ three-run home run in the sixth put the first-place Cardinals ahead by four.

PADRES 7, ROCKIES 5: Pinch-hitter Brett Wallace had a tiebreakin­g RBI single as visiting San Diego took advantage of Colorado catcher Nick Hundley’s throwing error to score three runs in the ninth inning.

DODGERS 8, REDS 3:Yasiel Puig and Kike Hernandez homered during a fiverun second inning for host L.A.

ORIOLES 4,A’S 3: Chris Davis hit two home runs, the second a tiebreakin­g shot with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off switch-pitcher Pat Venditte, to power Baltimore .

Davis connected on a 2-2 offering from Venditte (0-1), the first ambidextro­us pitcher in the majors since 1995.

Venditte was recalled from Triple-A Nashville before the game for his second stint with Oakland this season. It was the second straight night in which the Orioles beat the A’s with a home run in their final at-bat. Manny Machado hit the game-winner in the 13th inning less than 24 hours earlier.

RED SOX 22, MARINERS 10: Jackie Bradley Jr. hit two homers and three doubles to drive in seven runs and Boston once again battered Seattle, roughing up Felix Hernandez at Fenway.

The Red Sox got 26 hits in the highestsco­ring game ever against Seattle. The Mariners broke loose for the second straight day after manager John Farrell took a medical leave for the rest of the season to treat his lymphoma.

RANGERS 12, TAMPA BAY RAYS 4:

Colby Lewis (13-5) threw six innings of one-run ball and host Texas battered Rays ace Chris Archer (10-9), who gave up eight runs and 11 hits in 51/3 innings.

TIGERS 4, ASTROS 2 (11): Victor Martinez hit a tiebreakin­g RBI double in a three-run 11th to lift visiting Detroit. Preston Tucker led off the bottom of the ninth with a homer to right-center against Bruce Rondon to tie it at one, spoiling an impressive start by Justin Verlander.

CUBS 6, WHITE SOX 3: Jake Arrieta pitched into the seventh inning and the visiting Cubs won their ninth straight to match their longest streak in seven seasons. The Cubs matched their longest streak since they reeled off nine in a row during the 2008 NL Central championsh­ip season and made it 15 wins in 16 games.

TWINS 4, INDIANS 1: Tyler Duffey took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning of his second big league game and earned his first win to lead host Minnesota.

A one-out double by Francisco Lindor in the sixth was the only hit Duffey (1-1) permitted before leaving at the end of the inning. The 24-year-old righty struck out seven and worked around five walks.

ROYALS 9, ANGELS 4: Salvador Perez homered to lead off a six-run second inning and Johnny Cueto won his second consecutiv­e start for host Kansas City.

Cueto (9-7) allowed one run and eight hits over eight innings, striking out four without a walk. The former All-Star has only allowed six runs in four starts since his trade to Kansas City, including the shutout he tossed against the Tigers in his home debut earlier this week..
