Kentucky is upset by UCLA
Thomas Welsh led five players in double figures with 21 points and host UCLA knocked off No. 1 Kentucky, 87-77, on Thursday night in the Bruins’ first victory over a top-ranked team since 2003.
Bryce Alford and Isaac Hamilton added 15 points each, Tony Parker had 11 and Aaron Holiday 10 for the Bruins (5-3), who led almost the entire game and shot 53% from the field. They last beat a No. 1 team on March 13, 2003, defeating Arizona 96-89 in overtime.
Isaiah Briscoe led Kentucky (7-1) with 20 points. Jamal Murray added 17 and Derek Willis added 11. They lost a regular-season game for the first time since March 8, 2014, at Florida.
DEVILS BEAT ’CANES
Mike Cammalleri scored twice, backup goalie Keith Kincaid stopped 30 shots, and the Devils beat host Carolina, 5-1.
Adam Henrique, Stephen Gionta and Jacob Josefson also scored for the Devils. Cammalleri increased his team-leading points total to 25 as the Devils won for the second time in three games and improved to 8-4 on the road.
NEW GM FOR JAYS
The Toronto Blue Jays have hired longtime Indians executive Ross Atkins as their new general manager.
Atkins, who worked as Cleveland’s player personnel director, will join former Indians president Mark Shapiro — a close friend — with the Blue Jays.
Atkins succeeds Alex Anthopoulos, who left the Blue Jays shortly before Shapiro took over the American League East champions. The Blue Jays announced the hiring of Atkins Thursday.
HARDAWAY DEMOTED
Atlanta Hawks guard Tim Hardaway Jr., acquired from the Knicks during the NBA draft for a first-round pick, has been assigned to Canton of the NBA Development League
Hardaway has played in just four games as he has struggled to earn a role in coach Mike Budenholzer’s rotation.
In his first two seasons, both with the Knicks, Hardaway averaged 10.8 points in 151 games.
