Trullo D’Oro
Gem Assures the Warmth and Art of Italian/Adriatic Cuisine
Just the suggestion of fine Italian dining brings warmth to the soul and a quickened step. Think of experiencing cuisine from Italy’s Adriatic city of Bari in Puglia. Bellissimo! Puglia is located in the heel of the Italian boot and called the “California of Italy” for its temperate climate, local farms and fresh seafood. Regional cooking features savory ingredients like fresh herbs, truffles, butternut squash, home-made pastas and the tenderest meats available. It’s delightful and combines home style warmth with fine cuisine. Chef Gino Giannuzzi has had more than 38 successful years in the restaurant business and he and his wife, Maria continue their passion by returning to their renovated restaurant, Trullo d’Oro or domes of gold located in Hicksville, New York. As you enter, there is music playing softly and a sunny mural of the reflective domed houses characteristic of the region. Look at pictures of these houses and cobblestone streets for yourself. Trullo D’Oro has a spacious dining room with red checked tablecloths and a bar crafted from wine crates and regional tiles. The irrepressible chef Gino, former owner of Zucca restaurant in the West Village of New York City and his wife Maria enthusiastically sat us down at a round table. My friends and I started with the Burrata Di Bari served with fresh artichokes, olives and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. We vowed to make it our favorite gourmet comfort food while enjoying it over a nice glass of Pinot Grigio. It was super-fresh, soft and appetizing; traditional home-made mozzarella. We also crunched into bruschetta and some not-tobe-missed traditional seafood appetizers. We enjoyed calamari and baked clams, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth and perfectly seasoned. Highly recommended is the mushroom risotto, don’t miss it. Garlic, lemon, white wine, olive oil and fresh herbs are expertly laced through their dishes. You see this when you taste the incredible Branzino, whole Mediterranean sea bass sprigs of rosemary and served with assorted fresh vegetables. The fish is fresh, tender and flaky served with farm-fresh vegetables. We also savored the thick and juicy veal chop delightfully prepared with red pepper, onions, potatoes and mushrooms. Our table of friends also enjoyed the Controfiletto a Modo-Mio which is New York prime strip steak with mushrooms, onions and red peppers, expertly broiled and arriving sizzling to your table. There are also delicious pasta dishes like Cavatelli della nonna. Nonna, is Italian for grandmother and shows the experience and authenticity of Trullo d’Oro.
