McAdoo shaping his staff

- BY RALPH VACCHIANO

BEN MCADOO’S first coaching staff with the Giants will look different than Tom Coughlin’s last one. But not that much different. At least seven assistant coaches from last year’s staff will be retained by McAdoo for the 2016 season, according to a source. That includes defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Mike Sullivan, who is expected to be promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.

The other holdovers are expected to be tight ends coach Kevin Gilbride Jr., safeties coach Dave Merritt, cornerbacks coach Tim Walton, running backs coach Craig Johnson and special teams coordinator Tom Quinn.

There could be other holdovers from Coughlin’s 16-man staff if McAdoo decides to retain or promote offensive assistant Ryan Roeder, defensive assistant Rob Leonard or assistant offensive line coach Lunda Wells.

McAdoo said on Monday that he has assembled “about half” of his staff. It appears he is still searching for new coaches for the offensive and defensive lines and linebackers, plus a new strength and conditioning coach. He has already hired former LSU receivers coach Adam Henry to take the same position with the Giants.

And a source confirmed that Frank Cignetti Jr., a former Rutgers offensive coordinator (2011), is expected to join McAdoo’s staff as the new quarterbacks coach. Cignetti was an assistant coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania when McAdoo was a student there in the late ’90s. He was the St. Louis Rams’ offensive coordinator last season and their quarterbacks coach for three seasons before that.

The Giants have not officially announced any of McAdoo’s staff yet. However, McAdoo said he had his first staff meeting – or at least a partial meeting – on Monday.
