ALBANY — State regulators need to get tougher when it comes to imposing fines on poorly run nursing homes, an audit by state Controller Thomas DiNapoli (inset) revealed.
His office found the state Health Department imposed f fines on nursing h homes in only the most serious cases — where a violation has caused harm to an individual or is placing people in immediate jeopardy — amounting to less than 4% of all violations p processed by the department.
“We are continuing to work to ensure that fines are assessed in a timely manner,” said Health Department spokesman James Plastiras.
