Ex-officer gets prison for car insurance fraud

-

A FORMER NYPD cop was sentenced to two to six years in prison on Monday for auto insurance fraud, the state attorney general’s office said.

Jose Urena, 33, formerly of the 25th Precinct, took a plea deal in August, admitting to insurance fraud and scheme to defraud.

In 2013, he staged an accident involving a 2007 Mercedes-Benz S550. The year before on a different model Mercedes, he falsely reported that it had been vandalized. In 2014, he pulled a similar stunt with his Dodge Charger, prosecutors said.

“This elaborate scheme was a brazen attempt to game the insurance system for profit,” Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement. Shayna Jacobs
