Carson in ‘white’ rip at Obama
GOP PRESIDENTIAL wannabe Ben Carson said the nation’s first black President d doesn’t understand African-Americans because he was “raised white.”
The neurosurgeon-turnedpolitician questioned President Obama’s black “experience,” referring to the commander-inchief’s white mother.
“He was, you know, raised white,” Carson (photo inset) said in a Politico podcast that aired Tuesday. “I mean, like most Americans, I was proud that we broke the color barrier when he was elected, but . . . he didn’t grow up like I grew up.”
Carson was responding to a reporter’s question about his reaction when Obama was elected in 2008. Amid that pride, Carson said he also recognized that he and Obama had two “very different” upbringings. The doctor said Obama’s childhood — spent partially with his mom in Indonesia — made it difficult for him to identify with African-Americans.
“Many of his formative years were spent in Indonesia. So, for him to, you know, claim that, you know, he identifies with the experience of black Americans, I think, is a bit of a stretch.”
Carson reiterated that rhetoric on MSNBC Tuesday.
“He grew up in white America,” he told anchor Thomas Roberts. “Doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just that when a claim is made that he represents the black experience, it’s just not true.”
Carson — who grew up in Detroit with a single mom who worked three jobs — also downplayed racism during the Politico podcast, saying discrimination in 2016 is far less of a problem than what he experienced growing up.
“Remember now, I’ve been around for 64 years, you know,” he said. “I’ve had a chance to see what real racism is.”
The doctor added that classism — not racism — is the issue on the table. “A lot of things that people classify as racism is classism . . . and if people of a certain race happen to fall into a lower class, then they get the brunt of it.”
