Moving acts of heroism

-

No buses, no subways, no New York City as we know it. That’s no exaggeration. And it’s drivers, conductors, station agents, maintenance men and women and others who make those buses and subways go. Which is why we at the Daily News have the great pleasure of annually saluting the standouts among the 40,000 workers who keep the city’s circulatory system in working order.

Among the Hometown Heroes in Transit honored Tuesday morning were literal lifesavers: Ralph Johnson, Trelane Spencer, Gregory Harper, David Espana and Anthony Monserrate all rescued people who fell on subway tracks.

Richard Singleton, Timothy Fairless and Joe Landro separately stopped assailants and held them for police.

Chean Lee found a cherished lost photo of a deceased loved one, while Barbara Kenny found a lost man who had wandered off from his nursing home. Giuseppina Foglia evacuated a bus depot during a natural gas leak. Aishah Smith aided a passenger suffering a seizure.

The Hometown Heroes judging panel included New York’s two U.S. senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, with invaluable cooperation from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Transport Workers Union Local 100.

Next time you’re rushing from Point A to Point B, pause to appreciate the people who make it possible. They’re all hard workers. And some of them are heroes.
