Hil, Don seek to close deal
HILLARY CLINTON and Donald Trump are hoping that if they can make it here, they can make it anywhere.
With just a day to go before New York’s first pair of meaningful presidential primaries in decades, the former secretary of state and the bombastic billionaire are poised for victories that could help propel them to their parties’ nominations.
Aided by a strong debate performance, an endorsement from the Daily News Editorial Board and a damaging transcript from the same Editorial Board’s meeting with her competitor, Clinton has opened up a substantial 12-point lead over Bernie Sanders in the latest RealClearPolitics polling average in New York, beating him 53%-41%.
“If she beats him by more than 10 points, and all of the polls show her there by a comfortable margin, the math becomes completely implausible for Sanders to win the nomination,” David Birdsell, dean of the Public Affairs School at Baruch College, told The News.
In the Republican race, Trump has consistently held a big lead in the polls, beating Ohio Gov. John Kasich 52%-23% in the latest RealClearPolitics polling average in the state. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz follows at 17%.
“Trump could conceivably pick up all of New York’s 95 delegates,” Birdsell said. “No other candidate is going to be in a position to come close (to a majority of overall delegates), and running the deck in New York will put this right back on the table for (Trump).”
