Victor still in Cruz

- BY SETH WALDER

With months to go before opening day, Victor Cruz is running routes and believes he’ll be ready to go by Week 1.

The Giants wideout, who missed all of last season due to a calf injury in his comeback attempt from a torn right patellar tendon, is participating in offseason drills with the team, though he noted that the trainers have him on a “pitch count” to limit his workload.

Cruz is hoping he’ll be a full go by training camp.

“I’m not sure,” Cruz said Tuesday at the BTIG Charity Day. “I’m trying to just stick with what the training staff has for me right now. But that’s the plan in my mind.”

And does he have any doubt that he will be 100% by the time the season starts?

“No,” the receiver said. “Obviously I want to work hard to that point, my body feels really good right now. I’ve been running routes, running around the field and it feels really good. So I just want to continue to maintain that.”

If Cruz is healthy by the start of the season, that would be a serious addition to Big Blue’s offense.

“Victor, he’s a playmaker, a leader, veteran guy,” Eli Manning said. “Any time you can add one of your star receivers that you missed for a whole year, it can affect an offense. Thought we still did some good things and guys stepped up and made plays (last year), but to get him in the mix would be helpful.”

The Giants added Sterling Shepard in the second round of the NFL draft to strengthen the receiving corps.

LB OUT: Uani Unga, who came out of nowhere to make the Giants’ roster last year and ended up starting three games at middle linebacker, was waived. The 28-year-old Unga, who started the first two games of last season and one other in place of the injured Jon Beason, finished with 59 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. But he eventually lost his job to veteran Jasper Brinkley and battled a neck injury late in the season.
