Jays squash Cleveland’s streak

-

TORONTO — Cleveland’s franchise-record 14-game winning streak was stopped by a big day for Toronto’s sluggers and a contentious replay call.

Initially called out at home during Toronto’s three-run eighth inning, Ezequiel Carrera was ruled safe after a replay review, and the Blue Jays beat the Indians 9-6 on Saturday despite a cycle by Rajai Davis.

Indians manager Terry Francona said he was “shocked” the call on Carrera was overturned.

“They keep telling us it has to be conclusive,” Francona said. “I will look forward to an explanation that I understand. As of now, from what I’ve seen, I don’t know how they did that.”

Toronto star Josh Donaldson hit a tying solo shot off Dan Otero in the seventh, and then made it 7-6 with an RBI single in the eighth. Michael Saunders added a two-run double, and Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his 16th save.

“They were fortunate enough to throw the last punch and that was the outcome of the game,” Cleveland reliever Tommy Hunter said.

Edwin Encarnacion and Troy Tulowitzki also homered for Toronto, which lost 2-1 in 19 innings on Friday, matching the longest game in Blue Jays history. Jason Grilli (2-2) pitched one inning for the win.

BRAVES 9, MARLINS 1: Freddie Freeman homered to help host Atlanta hand Marlins ace Jose Fernandez one of the worst starts of his career.

Fernandez allowed a career-high nine runs, six earned, and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings on Saturday.

TIGERS 3, RAYS 2: Justin Verlander pitched seven solid innings, and visiting Detroit earned its fifth consecutive win.

Verlander (8-6) allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits while improving to 5-2 in eight starts at Tropicana Field.

CARDINALS 3, BREWERS 0: Adam Wainwright pitched seven innings and Kolten Wong had a two-run triple, leading host St. Louis to the win.

The Cardinals turned four double plays, including the fourth, fifth and sixth.

WHITE SOX 7, ASTROS 6: Chris Sale pitched seven-plus innings to become the majors’ first 14-game winner, helping the White Sox get the victory on the road.
