Survivors: After 9/11, Hil with us

- BY CAMERON JOSEPH

PHILADELPHIA — Survivors of the 9/11 attacks touted Hillary Clinton’s work to help them after the towers came down in moving primetime speeches at the Democratic National Convention. Lauren Manning, a businesswoman who was badly injured and almost died in the attacks, fought through tears as she recounted the horrors of recovery — and how Clinton had literally stood by her side.

“I fought as hard as I could so that the terrorists would not get one more,” she said.

“Hillary Clinton stood with me during that fight and in the darkest of days, and in the hardest of times the ones who show up mean everything,” she continued. “She took my bandaged hand into her own. Our connection wasn’t between a senator and a constituent, it was person to person.”

She was preceded by former NYPD Detective Joe Sweeney, who touted Clinton’s work in creating the 911 Health and Compensation Act, a program that funded health care for first responders and others who suffered long-lasting health problems because of the poison emitted from the pile.

Clinton fought for years while New York’s senator to get the program created in spite of tough opposition, playing a key role in its creation. It finally passed shortly after she left office.

“When we needed someone to speak for us, to stand with us, to fight on our behalf, Hillary Clinton was with us every step of the way,” he said. “A lot of people moved on, they thought everything was fine, but Hillary Clinton kept in touch and kept at it.”

Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens), who lost a relative in the attacks, similarly touted her work. And citing reporting by the Daily News, he pointed out that Trump had not only done little to help after the attacks — he’d profited.

“Where was Donald Trump in the days and months and years after 9/11? He didn’t stand on the Pile,” Crowley (inset) said. “He cashed in, collecting $150,000 in federal funds intended to help small businesses recover.”
