Pap blows it again as Tribe stuns Nats

-

Francisco Lindor pushed an RBI single through the Nationals’ drawn-in infield with one out in the ninth inning, and the Indians rallied for three runs in their final at-bat for a stunning 7-6 win on Tuesday night in a matchup of two first-place teams with sights on October.

Down two runs and three outs from their losing streak reaching a season-high four games, the host Indians rallied against Nationals closer Jonathan Papelbon (2-4), who did not get an out before he was pulled by manager Dusty Baker.

This is the second straight awful outing for Papelbon, who came into a tie game in the ninth Sunday and promptly allowed four runs in a 10-6 loss to Padres. With the bases loaded, Lindor fisted his base hit into right field and danced his way up the first-base line as the Indians celebrated an improbable victory.

l Devon Travis scored the winning run on a wild pitch, and the host Blue Jays rallied for three runs in the 12th to beat the Padres 7-6.

l Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run home run, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Tyler Collins each had a pair of RBIs and the visiting Tigers roughed up knuckleballer Steven Wright to beat the Red Sox 9-8. With the game tied in the sixth, Collins drew a basesloaded two-out walk, which allowed Justin Upton to score the deciding run.

l The Rockies emphatically spoiled Chris Tillman’s bid to become the first 15-game winner in the majors. Carlos Gonzalez and Trevor Story had two RBIs apiece in a fourrun third inning, and visiting Colorado ended the Orioles’ five-game winning streak with a 6-3 victory.

l Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs, Tom Koehler pitched six innings of three-hit ball and the host Marlins beat the Phillies 5-0. Ichiro Suzuki made his first start in five games and went 1 for 5, giving him 2,997 career hits.
