Romo injury a big break for Big Blue

The Giants’ season-opening showdown looks like it has gotten a whole lot easier.

They’ll face a Cowboys team that most likely will be without Tony Romo, who suffered a broken bone in his back, coach Jason Garrett told reporters Saturday.

Romo, 36, was hurt on the third play of Thursday’s preseason game against the Seahawks. The Cowboys sent Romo for an MRI on Friday and that scan revealed the broken bone.

Since Romo has played with fractures in his back before, Garrett refused to rule him out for the Sept. 11 opener vs. the Giants.

However, a source told Pro Football Talk that Romo could miss 6-10 weeks and NFL.com reported that the bestcase scenario is for the quarterback to return by midseason. “We’re confident that he’s going to be coming back and playing football for us this year,” Garrett said.

Assuming the broken bone does keep Romo out for the opener, the Giants would probably face fourth-round pick Dak Prescott making his NFL debut. The one bright side for the Cowboys is that Prescott has been lighting it up in the preseason, completing 39 of 50 passes for 454 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Giants play Dallas for a second time on Dec. 11.

“I feel bad for Tony,” Eli Manning said on Saturday. “I know he had a tough season last year with injuries, and then to get injured in a preseason game and possibly miss some time — I don’t know all the details — but I feel for him.”

Romo grabbed his back after being hit from behind by Cliff Avril in Dallas’ preseason game on Thursday.

Romo instantly reached for his back in pain.
