Foul ball off knee can’t kick As’

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

Asdrubal Cabrera isn’t about to let a bruise, or swelling, or just about any minor injury keep him out of the lineup. The Mets shortstop left Friday night’s 10-5 win over the Phillies a few innings after fouling a ball off his right knee.

Terry Collins said he took Cabrera out to rest him, but he was considering giving him a day off Saturday to try and keep him healthy.

“I don’t know about that,” Cabrera said with a smile. “I thought it was smart to come out tonight, but we will see about tomorrow.”

Cabrera fouled the ball off the top of his right knee in the fifth inning as the Mets were rallying for six runs. The shortstop is already playing with a sore left knee, which has had him on the disabled list. Collins said Cabrera talked his way into staying in the game and only came out when it seemed in hand.

“Had we not got a big lead, Cabby wouldn’t have come out of the game,” Collins said. “Even though he was pretty sore.”

Cabrera is the Mets hottest hitter. He went 1-for-3 Friday night and is batting .364 with 20 extra-base hits, 22 RBI and 21 runs scored in 33 games since coming off the disabled list Aug. 19.

FLORES FINISHED?

Wilmer Flores was not optimistic about returning this season. The utility infielder missed his 12th game with a right wrist/hand injury Friday. A team source confirmed that Flores had a second MRI that shows no structural damage, but also shows there was very little progress with healing.

“I don’t know right now,” Flores said when asked if he’d play again this year.

Flores said the wrist/hand felt “OK,” Friday, but not good enough to swing a bat yet. He has had two cortisone shots, one in the wrist and one on the side of his hand. “It’s frustrating,” Flores said. Flores was hitting .267 with 16 home runs and 49 RBI in 103 games.

A GRAND STRETCH

Curtis Granderson singled and drove in a run Friday. Over his last 21 games, he has 20 RBI and 20 runs scored. … Travis d’Arnaud doubled to drive in the Mets first run. It was his first RBI since August 26
