Farewell to giant of the community
Mourners — after traveling from points across the city and places around the world — walked along a treelined block in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn, on Saturday morning, ultimately filling every pew in an area church before funeral services began for longtime Caribbean community leader Dr. Lamuel Stanislaus, 95.
Beginning with his dental practice in 1956, the dentist/diplomat/community leader’s outstanding service included representing Grenada in the UN and aiding New Yorkers and Caribbean residents through an array of organizations and initiatives.
Possessing keen civic and political insight, Stanislaus (photo inset) shared his knowledge with individuals, community groups, mayors at City Hall and governors in Albany for about a half-century.
There were many expressions of gratitude during the service at St. Francis of Assisi/St. Blaise Church. And before I left the sanctuary, I privately added my thank-you. I thought back to the start of the Daily News’ Caribbeat column in 1983, when a colleague gave me Stanislaus’ phone number and said he would give me a comprehensive and objective lay of the land for the Caribbean communities and the city at large.
Respected in elite international circles and by grass-roots organizers alike, he possessed an astonishing skill — even at a taller-than-most 6-feet-3, he never looked down on anyone.
