L.I. cop busted in wrong-way death wreck

AN OFF-DUTY Long Island cop was arrested Tuesday following a fatal wrongway crash in West Islip, officials said.

Officer Robert Scheuerer, of the Suffolk County Police Department, was charged with reckless endangerment for traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Sunrise Highway around 4:30 a.m., police said. Scheuerer, 24, was behind the wheel of a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder when it slammed into a 2016 Ford van on the westbound side of the highway between exits 39 and 40 (photo, above).

The driver of the van died at the scene after his vehicle caught fire. His name was not released.

The cop was rushed to a local hospital, where he was expected to recover, officials said. Scheuerer was automatically suspended without pay as detectives investigate the crash.

More charges could be forthcoming, officials said.
