Meet the Daily News’ new astrologer, Madalyn Aslan

The future’s looking good. Our new astrologer, Madalyn Aslan, reads the zodiac to “make life better for everyone.” “It’s assessing the environment around you,” she says. “It’s just that it’s millions of miles away as opposed to right next to you.” At 52, she lives in Manhattan and brings a galaxy’s worth of experience. She’s the author of the book, “What’s Your Sign?” She’s a descendent of Mary Todd Lincoln, can brag about doing a reading for Rock Hudson as a teenager and taught palmistry 101 at New York University. DAILY NEWS: Let’s go there — what’s your sign?

MADALYN ASLAN: I’m a Libra. And like all the others, I’m constantly trying for balance. I’m also kind of a wannabe Aquarius. I’m like most people who go through periods of wanting to be another sign or in another place.

DN: How’d you become interested in astrology?

MA: I really grew up with it. I cannot remember a time in my life when I didn't see things through that lens. My mother practiced and I just was surrounded by it. I was very curious about what made other people tick. And astrology seemed to be like the fastest shortcut to figuring people out.

DN: You studied English and writing in college. How did astrology become your career?

MA: As a child I began reading hands — that was my first love. Hands are amazing and lines change every three weeks, and there’s so much to see. My first professional reading was on the set of a film, “The Martian Chronicles,” I was doing when I was 14. That was a reading for Rock Hudson just a couple of years before his death. I was hired to act in the film and I was reading everyone because that's what I did. By the time I went to the University of London and Cornell, I was doing readings pretty steadily. I actually put myself through school doing that. I would do readings at Raoul’s (in SoHo). I used to live right above Tortilla Flats (in the Village). I’d come down three days a week and read table to table when I was in graduate school. This was the 1990s. All the time I was reading and I just thought, “This is life.”

DN: How can people use the stars and planets in their daily lives?

MA: Timing. It’s all about timing. The more you know, the more knowledge you have, the more power you have, the more information. The planets are constantly moving. And with astrology, you’re figuring the best place for you in it, when to do certain and different things because everything corresponds to the planets. Basically, it’s akin to this: “If it’s raining outside you take an umbrella.” If Mercury is retrograde you do other things to safeguard. I’m like the surgeon who cuts through and says, “Do this, and let’s do this. Fix this.” I really can see what others should be doing. It does help.

DN: The inclusion of a 13th sign in the zodiac by NASA has people flipping out. So what’s changed?

MA: Nothing. What I do like is that NASA is getting involved with astrology. Astronomers always were astrologers in the beginning. Every few years they pull this (sign) out, it’s like pulling out the old chestnut. It’s healthy and hopeful that NASA is coming into the conversation. But your sign hasn’t changed.
