Bomb heroes get big bump

THEY’RE the bomb!

The two NYPD Bomb Squad detectives who removed and dismantled one of the explosive devices found in Chelsea were promoted on Friday — but to Detectives Jason Hallik and Anthony Mason, it was another day on the job.

“We’ve been doing this a while,” said Hallik, who was promoted to detective second grade.

“Honestly, you just train and you do your job. Whether it’s an empty package or it’s something (else) ... you’re just out there doing your job.”

Hallik (r. in photo) was credited for operating the NYPD robot that picked up the unexploded bomb on W. 27th St. on Sept. 17 and loaded it onto a special container vehicle. Then, decked out in a blast resistant suit, he secured the bomb in the vehicle and closed the door.

The next day, he and Detective Anthony Mason (l.), who was also promoted to detective second grade, tried to figure out a way to open the bomb without it going off.

Thanks to their efforts, the device is now at a special facility in Maryland being evaluated for evidence. Hallik said the promotion came with a call from NYPD Chief of Counterterrorism James Waters, as much of an honor as the bump in rank.

“At first I didn’t believe it, actually,” Hallik said. “Not only was I being promoted, but the fact the chief called and congratulated me meant a lot.” The promotions came as the two Egypian airline employees who found the device in a bag and walked off with the bag were cleared of having involvement.

The promotion ceremony at 1 Police Plaza was a day of milestones. Capt. Zaheer Azeez was promoted to deputy inspector, making him the first Muslim officer to achieve that rank with the NYPD. Assistant Chief Juanita Holmes became the first black woman to run a borough command in the NYPD’s history. Holmes will be in charge of all patrol units in Queens North.

Conor McDonald, the son of Detective Steven McDonald — who was left a quadriplegic after he was shot repeatedly in Central Park in 1986 — was bumped up to detective sergeant from detective.
