After Todd Bowles announced that Smith would be Jets’ starter this Sunday against Ravens, the fourth-year West Virginia product said time and again that this “is not about me.” But in reality, these final 10 games are nothing short of an audition for Smith, who will become unrestricted free agent after this season. With Petty and Hackenberg on roster, the Jets’ current brain trust likely doesn’t view Smith as QB of future. So Smith will be playing to show rest of the league he can be a starter.
