Wilkerson dealing with Mo pain in game

- BY DANIEL POPPER

Muhammad Wilkerson is still dealing with the effects of the broken leg he suffered last season.

The Jets defensive lineman, who missed Sunday’s win over the Ravens with what the team termed an ankle injury, admitted Thursday he’s battling a sore tendon that’s “related” to the surgery he underwent in January. Wilkerson noted that the pain is not necessarily in the ankle.

“It’s a tendon that’s by the ankle that’s bothering me,” he said.

Wilkerson fractured his right fibula in the Jets’ season-ending loss to the Bills in Week 17 last year. He went under the knife a few days later.

The 6-4, 315-pound Temple product then signed a five-year, $86 million extension with the Jets in July. But his production has waned through the first seven weeks of the season. He has just 1.5 sacks in six games after totaling career-high 12 in 2015.

“It’s a long season, and it’s not just myself out there,” Wilkerson said of how tough this year has been. “It’s not a one-man show. It’s a team sport. And we got a lot of games left to improve.”

After missing Sunday’s game, Wilkerson was sidelined for Wednesday’s practice before returning in a limited role on Thursday.

The Jets have been cognizant of Wilkerson’s leg this season, managing the issue by providing him with rest days during the practice week — both sitting him out altogether and maintaining his workload when he does participate.

But now Wilkerson has missed game action because of the lingering problems related to the broken leg, which certainly adds concern regarding the severity of the injury and whether it will be an issue as the Jets move forward this season.

When asked on Thursday if he feels better about Wilkerson playing this weekend at the Browns, Todd Bowles said, “I have to see.”

Wilkerson provided short and direct answers when pressed to provide details about his leg.
