Too much football is overkill

-

Cherry Hill, N.J.: As a lifelong NFL fan, I probably watch less football then I ever have in the past few years. My first beef with the NFL is there are too many commercials and instant replays that kill the flow of the game. Yes, there have always been commercials, but there are more then ever since they started signing the big TV deals. It’s leading me toward watching the game on DVR later in the day and fast forwarding all of the commercials to save an hour.

Then, the NFL decided a few years ago it was a good idea to be in the news 365 days a year. What makes sports great is that once the season is done, you recharge your battery and take a few months off and then can’t wait for it to come back. But the NFL and the media have made an effort to talk about it from January to December. It’s to the point where I almost resent the NFL now because it’s trying to trample over sports like the NBA, NHL and MLB in the offseason.

Finally, there is the Thursday night game, and how it has just diluted the product. I used to watch football all day Sunday and then the Game of the Week would be on Monday night, and then you couldn’t wait until next Sunday. Now, the Monday night game is usually bad because the best matchup is Sunday night; the Thursday night game takes away a good Sunday game.

Mark Cuban was right when he said “less is more” and that the NFL was expanding itself too much for the almighty dollar. I’m a case in point: The NFL is just too much in my face these days. Chris Olivo
