QB’s strong 2nd half helps Jets
complain when we lose, and we ain’t gonna b---h about it when we win.”
The Browns picked apart the Jets in the first half, hitting Terrelle Pryor on underneath routes and against Revis and finding big holes in the run game. Cleveland scored 20 points in the first two quarters, and held the Jets to a single touchdown (a Bilal Powell run). On Twitter, Joe Namath called for the Jets to make a quarterback change (a request Bowles did not oblige). It looked like the Jets were toast.
Revis, who also gave a halftime speech last week against the Ravens, told the defense that they weren’t leaving the stadium without a victory. Bowles spoke, too, and backup safety Rontez Miles was fired up as well. Dorrell asked the offense, “Who is going to step up?” according to Quincy Enunwa, who was the one, it turned out, to step up.
“Guys got a little bit more fire up under our asses and started actually playing football,” Revis said.
It was about attitude, Bowles said, and there was certainly a shift in that department in the third quarter.
Fitzpatrick, who completed just three of 14 passes in the first half, immediately led his team on a 78-yard drive that culminated in a 24-yard pass to Enunwa, who shimmied his way past defenders and into the end zone. Later, the third-year receiver caught a huge 57-yard pass to get Gang Green into the red zone.
The Jets got their running game back on track, too, as Matt Forte churned out yardage on the ground and picked up a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters. Forte finished with 82 yards and two touchdowns on the day.
The defense stepped up too. After Revis had repeatedly allowed Pryor to make plays in the first half, the Browns receiver only caught a two-point conversion attempt in the second half. And aside from a virtually meaningless touchdown with 12 seconds left in the game, the defense pitched a shutout in the final two quarters. Marcus Gilchrist and Lorenzo Mauldin came up with interceptions.
Sunday’s win was the first time in franchise history the Jets won a game in which they faced a halftime deficit of 13 points or more on the road, per Pro-Football-Reference.com. They were 0-71, including the playoffs, prior to Sunday’s victory over the Browns.
After the game, Bowles said he didn’t consider a quarterback change at halftime and
