The furry homeless need care, too

-

Manhattan: In a perfect world, every human and every animal would have a warm place to seek shelter and call home, especially as temperatures begin to plummet. The reality is, homelessness is a problem, and my heart breaks equally for the animals that remain loyally by their owners’ side, weathering the elements together. In a lot of instances, homeless shelters do not allow pets, which inevitably forces the men and women with loving companions to remain on the street. Consider reaching out to the Humane Society of the United States to participate in their Fill the Bowl Project.

You can help organize a local pet food collection within your community, in the lobby of your apartment building or your workplace, or set up a display during coffee hour at your place of worship. Please visit www.humanesociety.org/fillthebowl for more information, and remember providing food and cozy blankets for the homeless is a wonderful thing; it’s even more wonderful when we can help alleviate stress and provide for their furry family members as well. Kelly Vitko,

Humane Society of the United States Faith Outreach Volunteer Bronx: Voicer Shawn Kennedy says, “We have to change the way of thinking in modern times where cheap labor is everywhere but the United States.” We’ve had decades of workers’ salaries not keeping up with inflation. That’s why we have a disappearing middle class and increased poverty. We have working homeless, because their salaries are not enough for them to afford housing. There’s resistance to raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, which would still be a poverty wage. Even police, who risk their lives to protect us, get less than middle-class salaries. No cheap labor in the U.S.? I guess if Kennedy was on the Titanic, he would have complained about not enough icebergs. Sunnyside: A younger and very qualified Sen. Hillary Clinton would have been our President for the past eight years if Barack Obama had stayed out of the 2008 Democratic nomination process. Garden City, L.I.: New York City has lost one of its biggest supporters, Jack Rudin. He, along with his brother Lew and the whole Rudin family, put their heart and soul into making the city a better place — especially support for the NYPD and FDNY. God bless. Whitestone: So, former South Carolina police officer Michael Slager “feared for his life” (“Lone South Carolina juror refuses to convict ex-cop Michael Slager for Walter Scott’s murder,” Dec. 3)? That’s why he shot Walter Scott five times — in the back. As Scott was running away. It’s a good thing Slager doesn’t run in marathons; he would give new meaning to the term “mass shooting”! Slager lied about the incident, planted a Taser next to Scott, and performed no lifesaving actions. But he did have the presence of mind to handcuff the dying man. Perhaps he still felt threatened. After all, Slager might have slipped on the spreading puddle of Scott’s blood. Oh, Scott’s offense? A broken taillight. Astoria: To Voicer Joe Fishbane: Donald Trump was sent by God and he is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ? Excuse me? Feel free to tell us all about the time that Jesus said He could “grab them by the p---y.” Feel free to tell us all about the time that Jesus started a fake university and defrauded people out of their life savings. Feel free to tell us all about the time that Jesus stiffed people who did work for Him. Feel free to tell us all about the time that Jesus made unwanted sexual advances against a dozen women. Feel free to tell us all about the time that Jesus sold Christ brand steaks and Christ brand vodka and put the name Christ on every tall building in the Holy Land. Comparing Trump to Jesus is about as deluded as it gets. The man is the furthest thing from Jesus. This time of year, especially, you should be ashamed of yourself for making such a comparison. Douglaston: To Voicer Joe Sciara in Monday’s Voice of the People: Hillary’s 2 million-plus more votes would make her the president of California, New York and a few large cities only. There are approximately 3,100 counties in the U.S. Donald Trump won approximately 2,600 of them. The Founding Fathers knew what they were doing. Baltimore: My three sisters and I were on our way back to Brooklyn Jefferson Siegel when it happened (“Subway surfer decapitated in Manhattan after falling from train,” Dec. 4). I would like to thank everyone riding in our car. They were so cool, calm and funny. That might have been caused by O2 deprivation. I thank the conductor for keeping us minimally informed throughout. He knew that too much information might have been a bad thing. And last but not least the FDNY and NYPD. What a gorgeous way to end the ordeal. And I mean gorgeous, literally! Well done, New York. Brooklyn: To Voicer Evelyn Zelmanowitz: You are certainly not losing it! I respectfully plead with you to continue sending your precious letters to the Daily News. Please know that I appreciate you and look forward to hearing from you. The wise voice of our elders is exactly what we need in our world now more than ever. Wishing you continued long life and good health. Manhattan: Alan Dershowitz did an excellent job of illustrating the dangers that can result when bicyclists ignore red lights (“Pedestrians and bicyclists, at odds,” Op-Ed, Dec. 3). But he neglected to mention what I consider to be an even greater threat — bicyclists riding on sidewalks. In Harlem, where I live, they are ubiquitous, and as they swerve perilously close to pedestrians they frequently radiate an aura of self-entitlement
