ISRAEL: u.S. KEY IN VOTE
Bibi: Bam ‘pushed’ UN slam
ISRAELI GOVERNMENT officials said Tuesday they have “ironclad” information that the Obama administration helped orchestrate last week’s UN resolution declaring Israeli settlements in occupied territories illegal.
The U.S. abstained from voting on the measure — which condemned the settlements as a “flagrant violation” of international law — thus allowing it to pass by a 14-0 margin and souring an already bitter relationship between the two nations.
“We have ironclad information that emanates from sources in the Arab world and that shows the Obama administration helped craft this resolution and pushed hard for its eventual passage,” said David Keyes, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “We’re not just going to be a punching bag and go quietly into the night.”
Keyes did not say how Israel obtained the information.
Netanyahu, who has had a chilly relationship with Obama, called the resolution “shameful” and has accused the U.S. of playing an active role in the resolution’s passage. The State Department denied the allegations.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Kerry plans to lay out his vision for Israeli-Palestinian peace in his final policy speech Wednesday.
“He feels it’s his duty in his waning weeks and days as secretary of state to lay out what he believes is a way to a peaceful two-state solution in the Middle East,” a State Department spokesman said.
Israel’s government has made no secret of the fact it is counting on President-elect Donald Trump to be more accepting of future settlement plans.
Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev, a close Netanyahu ally, dismissed Obama. “He is history,” she told Channel 2 TV. “We have Trump.”
