Ambulance hits & kills 89-year-old

- John Annese

AN FDNY EMS ambulance struck and killed an elderly man walking in the passing lane of the Cross Island Parkway in Queens on Tuesday night, police and fire sources said.

The pedestrian, an 89-year-old man, was walking on the southbound side of the parkway near 109th Ave. in Queens Village at about 8:20 p.m., when the ambulance plowed into him, sources said.

Medics took him to North Shore University Hospital in Nassau County, but he couldn’t be saved, officials said.

The driver of the ambulance went to Long Island Jewish Medical Center with minor injuries.

The ambulance wasn’t carrying a patient and didn’t appear to be headed to a job, sources said. The emergency personnel in the ambulance tried to save his life.

In a separate incident at about 7:15 p.m., a hit-and-run driver struck a 39-year-old woman walking in a crosswalk in East New York, Brooklyn, critically injuring her.

Rescuers took her to Brookdale University Hospital, and the SUV’s driver fled, cops said.
