Chanukah honors for FDNY 9/11 vics

-

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro lit a menorah Wednesday in honor of the three Jewish firefighters who died on 9/11, and a relative of one hero found the tribute quite fitting.

“My dad always found a reason to celebrate and find light in the darkest places,” said Tara Edgette, 33, whose father, Firefighter Alan Feinberg of Battalion 9, died in the attack on the twin towers. “He would have loved this.”

Edgette was one of more than 100 people who gathered in the auditorium of the department’s Brooklyn headquarters for a ceremony celebrating the fifth night of Chanukah.

Also honored were Stephen Belson of Battalion 7 and David Weiss of Rescue 1, who were both killed helping people get out of the towers before they collapsed.

“They are three of the 343 members who made the supreme sacrifice, giving their own lives so that others could live,” Nigro said. “It is important to be with your family at this time, and our FDNY family is no exception.”

Participants closed the program with a prayer and several songs. Laura Dimon
