Coughlin interviews with Jags for possible
THE NEXT time the Jacksonville Jaguars visit MetLife Stadium, Tom Coughlin could be in two places at once: On the stadium wall in the Giants’ Ring of Honor, and on the visitors’ sideline as Jacksonville’s head coach.
Coughlin, 70, interviewed Wednesday for the Jaguars’ head coaching vacancy, according to an ESPN report, just one day after the Daily News reported that Coughlin was a leading candidate to fill the vacancy at the Buffalo Bills, who fired Rex Ryan on Tuesday.
The Jaguars fired Gus Bradley on Dec. 18 in part to get a head start on the coaching search entering an offseason in which numerous clubs are expected to be seeking new coaches. Bradley’s 14-48 record in three-plus seasons gave him the worst win percentage (.226) in the Super Bowl era among coaches with a minimum of 50 games.
Coughlin was the first coach and general manager of the expansion Jaguars beginning in 1995 at age 49. He guided Jacksonville to a 68-60 record in eight seasons (.531 win percentage) and a 4-4 playoff record in eight seasons, including an appearance in the 1996 AFC championship game, before being fired after the 2002 season.
Coughlin then coached the Giants for 12 seasons, compiling an identical regular season win percentage to his tenure in Jacksonville (102-90, .531) but winning Super Bowls XLII and XLVI. Coughlin missed the playoffs in his final four seasons
