Minus Coach K, Duke does not back down

DURHAM, N.C. — No. 8 Duke lost its Hall of Fame coach earlier in the week, its most experience­d player in the first half and most of its huge lead in the second.

Freshman Jayson Tatum and acting head coach Jeff Capel made sure the Blue Devils wouldn’t lose the game, too.

Tatum matched a season high with 22 points, scoring nine in the final 4½ minutes, and Duke held on to beat Boston College 93-82 on Saturday in Capel’s season debut as Mike Krzyzewski’s temporary replacemen­t.

VILLANOVA 93, MARQUETTE 81: Kris Jenkins scored a season-high 23 points, Josh Hart had 19 and No. 1 Villanova returned to form with a win over Marquette in Philly.

LOUISVILLE 65, GEORGIA TECH 50: Donovan Mitchell scored 13 of his 20 points in the second half as Louisville became the last Atlantic Coast Conference team to pick up a league win.

FLORIDA ST. 93, VIRGINIA TECH 78: Terance Mann scored 22 points and Dwayne Bacon added 17 as host No. 12 Florida State defeated No. 21 Virginia Tech.

CREIGHTON 78, PROVIDENCE 64: Justin Patton had 20 points and Maurice Watson Jr. scored 11 with 14 assists to help visiting No. 10 Creighton beat Providence 78-64.

RIVALRY POSTPONED: The rivalry game between No. 14 North Carolina and North Carolina State scheduled for Saturday night in Chapel Hill was postponed a day because of winter weather and potentiall­y dangerous road conditions.

WEST VIRGINIA 82, TCU 70: Daxter Miles Jr. tied a season high with 22 points and No. 7 West Virginia needed a late burst to beat TCU in Morgantown, W.Va.

BUTLER 85, GEORGETOWN 76: Freshman Kamar Baldwin scored 16 points and No. 18 Butler followed its upset of No. 1 Villanova with an overtime victory over host Georgetown.

FLORIDA 83, TENNESSEE 70: KeVaughn Allen connected on four 3-pointers in the final 7:34 and scored 23 points to send host No. 24 Florida to a victory over Tennessee. INDIANA 96, ILLINOIS 80: James Blackmon Jr. scored 25 points, Thomas Bryant finished with 20 and No. 25 Indiana defeated Illinois in Bloomingto­n for its first Big Ten Conference win of the season.

KENTUCKY 97, ARKANSAS 71: De’Aaron Fox scored a career-high 27 points, Isaiah Briscoe and Derek Willis each added 15 and No. 6 Kentucky pulled away to beat Arkansas in Lexington. —AP
