UNC routs Wolfpack in rivalry

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Justin Jackson scored 21 points and No. 14 North Carolina went on a 20-point first-half run to blow Sunday’s game open and beat North Carolina State, 107-56.

Joel Berry II added 19 points for the Tar Heels (14-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who beat the Wolfpack for the 20th time in 22 games in a game postponed from Saturday night because of snow and ice.

The Tar Heels did it in an unexpected­ly lopsided fashion, jumping to a 26-4 lead and pushing that to 56-23 by halftime on Jackson’s 3-pointer just before the horn.

N.C. State (12-4, 1-2) came in with momentum after blowing out No. 21 Virginia Tech behind a triple-double from star freshman point guard Dennis Smith Jr. But Smith got in quick foul trouble Sunday, while the Wolfpack committed a bevy of turnovers that fueled the Tar Heels’ attack.

PURDUE 66, WISCONSIN 55: Caleb Swanigan had 18 points and 13 rebounds to help No. 20 Purdue get past No. 13 Wisconsin in West Lafayette, ending the Badgers’ nine-game winning streak.

MINNESOTA 78, OHIO STATE 68: Amir Coffey scored 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, helping Minnesota stave off another setback at home with a victory over Ohio State.

Akeem Springs scored 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting from 3-point range for the Gophers (15-2, 3-1).

UCLA 89, STANFORD 75: Lonzo Ball scored 21 points and No. 4 UCLA led all the way in beating Stanford. Bryce Alford added 17 points and TJ Leaf had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bruins (16-1, 3-1 Pac-12), who improved to 10-0 at Pauley Pavilion. They hit 11 3-pointers, led by Ball and Alford with four apiece.

MONMOUTH 71, MARIST 64: Austin Tilghman scored a career-high 21 points coming off the bench and Micah Seaborn added 16 points to help Monmouth beat Marist in West Long Branch.

Tilghman made 5 of 6 free throws in the final five minutes to keep Marist at bay. He finished 10 for 12 from the free-throw line, hitting a pair for a 62-59 lead, Sam Ibiezugbe made a layup and Tilghman added two more free throws with 3:56 left for a 66-59 advantage.

VIRGINIA 79, WAKE FOREST 62: London Perrantes scored 24 points and No. 11 Virginia used a 10-0 second-half run to pull away from visiting Wake Forest, sending the Demon Deacons to their 25th consecutiv­e road loss in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

UCONN 64, UCF 49: Rodney Purvis scored 17 points and host UConn snapped a four-game losing streak by beating UCF .

IOWA 68, RUTGERS 62: Senior Peter Jok scored 18 points with 11 rebounds and Iowa rallied from nine down to beat visiting Rutgers and move back to .500 in the Big Ten.
