Cops eyeing dad & boy in tot’s wounds
A 3-MONTH-OLD Bronx girl was found with skull fractures, signs of attempted strangulation and numerous old and new injuries to her head, ribs and legs, sources said Wednesday.
Sherling Camacho was on life support at Montefiore Medical Center — and cops were investigating whether her father or her 5-year-old brother was responsible, sources said.
Sherling suffered a fractured collarbone, fractured shinbones, damage to the tissue beneath her tongue, a torn off toenail, and broken blood vessels suggesting someone tried to strangle her.
Sources said doctors also found evidence of past abuse — old and new blood clots outside her brain and fractures to her ribs and thighbones.
Paramedics discovered Sherling unresponsive in her West Farms home just after 10 a.m. Tuesday after responding to a 911 call about a baby not breathing.
Sherling’s mother, Katherine Rodriguez (photo), told police she had fed the baby and then left for her job at an AT&T store about 9:30 a.m.
The 23-year-old’s husband, Manuel Camacho, told cops he burped his daughter, who then vomited and stopped breathing, sources said.
Two other people live in the apartment — a 35-year-old babysitter and a 60-year-old man who rents a room. The roommate told police he was awakened by Camacho, who rushed into his room, baby in arms, and said she wasn’t breathing.
Camacho, 27, asked the man to call 911, then placed Sherling on the floor and started giving her chest compressions as if she were an adult, according to sources citing the roommate’s account.
The man put the 911 dispatcher on speaker phone — and Camacho, following instructions, administered proper rescue breathing, sources said.
Sherling’s parents have no history with child welfare officials — but Camacho, who works as a pizza deliveryman, was busted in August on an accusation of choking his wife, sources said.
The case was tossed but details weren’t available because the records have been sealed.
Cops are also looking into the possible involvement of Sherling’s brother, Manuel Jr., who is big for his age, aggressive and might suffer from a personality disorder, sources said.
