FASHION HITS AND MISSES
Fabulous fringe and bright red alerts
Loud fashion at the Grammys
THE GOWNS were louder than the music.
Sunday’s Grammy Awards were a parade of flashy fringe, feathers, cleavage-baring cutouts and an unexpected political statement — a pro-Trump message on a dress worn in the heart of Hollywood.
Many of music’s biggest stars, including Adele, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez, hit dreadfully low fashion notes on a night where they typically shine.
Among the losers was powerhouse songstress Adele who disappointed in a hideous, emerald green, longsleeved Givenchy gown that looked like it was made from old drapes.
“The style is very old lady Hollywood,” celebrity stylist Hoza Rodriguez told the Daily News of the dress that sent mixed style signals to fashion lovers.
The “Hello” singer’s gown offered a crisscross, checker-printed bust juxtaposed with a pleated skirt with geometric lace.
“It’s like a basket weave made of palm trees. I’m happy she’s not wearing black, but the prints-on-prints are a no,” he added.
Still, the most shocking outfit of the night came from out of nowhere. Joy Villa, 25, a little-known singer made her statement in a red, white and blue dress with President Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” written in silver sparkles down her gown. Trump’s moniker was also stitched on the back of the train as she proudly strutted down the carpet.
On social media, critics were not in harmony in their opinions about the pro-Trump look.
“How can you support a man who promotes so much hatred and is against you?” asked one user. “Where is the self-respect? Or respect for others?” Another user disagreed and applauded: “How brave! Love it.”
Surprisingly, Perry also pulled a fashion faux pas.
The “Rise” singer walked the red carpet wearing a metallic number that featured a tight turtleneck with rose-gold sequins and a champagnecolored skirt made of wispy feathers. “Katy Perry, did you just give up?” scoffed Rodriguez. “I don’t get it. She took her shaggy rug from home and wrapped it around her waist and called it an outfit.”
Jennifer Lopez — who typically takes top honors when
it comes to fashion — looked like she was channeling a bridesmaid’s worst nightmare in a Ralph and Russo lavender frock with a puffy tulle bow wrapped around her neck.
“The Love Don’t Cost a Thing” singer was almost redeemed by the gown’s super-high slit that offered much more than glimpses of her stunning legs. Another shocking miss was Lady Gaga. Fresh off her mind-blowing Super Bowl halftime performance, the singer put her breast foot forward showing more underboob than fabric in a leather two-piece number that looked more Hot Topic than haute.
“She must be wearing an outfit that didn’t make the cut for the big game,” quipped Rodriguez.
On the flip side, Michael Jackson’s daughter, Paris Jackson, 18, hit a home run — exemplifying the definition of her dad’s hit song, “PYT,” in a multicolor fringe jumpsuit by Balmain.
“The glitter and sparkle and texture is so fun,” Rodriguez gushed of the late king of pop’s daughter. She had also kept her hair and makeup subtle with a neutral lip. “She let the jumpsuit do the work,” Rodriguez added. Country gals Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill were twinning in red gowns with keyhole cutouts showing subtle cleavage with high front slits.
“I usually don’t like red, but I was feeling it,” Underwood declared.
