“Bell” is a happier topic for Engel, who takes great pride in the show, and the thorny topics it sometimes tackled.

“I think we impacted a whole generation worldwide. There’s something about the values we had and the kids were so outstandin­g and remember no comedy had gone to more than six countries.

“We were in 85 countries. I think we struck a nerve. We took on topics that no one else was dealing with.

“We did a homeless show in 1992. We took on an oil spill, the famous Jessie episode with the caffeine pills. We also did wheelchair basketball. I don’t think we realized the ground we were breaking.”

The moral of his book, he says, is “Dream big, and never, never, never, never give up! Because it’s not a straight line and it’s not how many times you get knocked down but how many times you come back. ” did not want to parse politics at the glittery opening of her return to Broadway in “Sunset Boulevard,” but she was more than happy to discuss the show’s themes about aging in Hollywood. “I work pretty steadily but the quality of the parts for somebody my age is not streaming out of Hollywood,” the 69-year-old star (inset) said. “You look to cable, you look at independen­t films.” Helping her celebrate at Cipriani 42nd St. was the show’s composer who currently has four shows on Broadway.
