Fariña hit hard on segregation
STATE LAWMAKERS grilled city schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña about segregation in prekindergarten programs on a Tuesday visit to Albany after a Daily News exclusive exposed the issue.
State Senate Education Committee Chairman Carl Marcellino questioned Fariña after she testified on Gov. Cuomo’s executive budget, and quoted a Jan. 29 article in the Daily News revealing that 854 of the city’s 1,861 pre-K programs were dominated 70% or more by a single race.
Fariña cited parent choice: “The same way you can go to private schools, parochial schools or charter schools, you can go to any pre-K,” she said.
