Isles buried under pile of Leafs

Auston Matthews scored twice, Frederik Andersen earned his 100th NHL victory and the Maple Leafs routed the Islanders, 7-1, on Tuesday night in Toronto.

The Maple Leafs set a season high for goals and won for the third time in nine games. They moved three points ahead of the Islanders for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. The Islanders fell to 10-4-2 in their past 16 games. Matthews increased his rookie total to 27 goals and Andersen stopped 33 shots. Josh Leivo had a career-high three points.

DEVILS HOLD ON

Defenseman Andy Greene scored the go-ahead goal on a power play and Kyle Palmieri converted on an odd-man rush with Taylor Hall to lead the host Devils over the struggling Ava- lanche 3-2.

Cory Schneider made 28 saves and Pavel Zacha added a goal as the Devils won for the fourth time in six games (4-1-1) in their push to make the playoffs.

Jeremy Smith stopped 37 shots in his NHL debut after seven seasons in the minor leagues. Recent waiver pickup Mark Barberio and Mikhail Grigorenko scored for Colorado, which has lost four straight and is 4-22-1 in its last 27 games.

The victory was only the Devils’ second against the Avalanche in 11 games.

l In the midst of losing their grip on first place, the Montreal Canadiens abruptly fired coach Michel Therrien on Tuesday and hired Claude Julien in hopes of getting their season back on track.

Julien was fired as coach of the Bruins last week and prediction­s that the veteran wouldn’t be out of work for long proved

true.

RAPTORS LAND IBAKA

Kyle Lowry said something had to change in Toronto. Serge Ibaka is on his way to try to make that happen.

The Raptors acquired the veteran power forward from Orlando on Tuesday for Terrence Ross and a 2017 first-round draft pick. Orlando general manager Rob Hennigan said Tuesday evening the trade of Ibaka for Ross was necessary the Magic in hopes of salvaging a season that has gone drasticall­y off course.

LLOYD ACROSS POND

A person with knowledge of the deal says reigning FIFA Women’s Player of the Year Carli Lloyd will sign a short-term contract to play for Manchester City.

Lloyd is expected to rejoin the Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League in June. Manchester City is the defending champion of the FA Women’s Super League.

YOUNG BRADY FAN DIES

A 10-year-old cancer patient, who in December lived out his dream of meeting Patriots quarterbac­k Tom Brady, has died.

Logan Schoenhard­t’s story gained national attention during a social media campaign that brought the Connecticu­t boy’s wish to the attention of the Patriots and Brady. He died Monday, according to Ray Lagan, the head of the Masters School in Simsbury, where Logan was a fourth-grade student.

Logan visited with Brady at the team’s facility in Foxborough, Massachuse­tts, and was named the team’s honorary captain for its Dec. 4 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.
