Brooklyn burned by Blazers
CJ McCollum scored 31 points to lead the Portland Trail Blazers past the visiting Brooklyn Nets, 130-116, on Saturday night.
Brook Lopez led the Nets with 26 points.
Lopez got things started for the Nets on a positive note with a three-point play on the first play of the game — but that would be Brooklyn’s largest lead.
Portland led by as many as 15, shooting 75 percent from the field in the first quarter.
THOMAS IN LEAD
Justin Thomas made a holein-one and surged into the lead with a 5-under 66 on a day of high entertainment in the Mexico Championship.
Thomas hit a 6-iron from 239 yards that one-hopped into the cup on the par-3 13th. He added a pair of birdies that gave him a one-shot lead over Dustin Johnson, with Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy right behind.
U.S. WOMEN LOSE
Substitute Ellen White scored on a rebound in close in the 89th minute and England stunned the United States 1-0 in the second round of the SheBelieves Cup at Red Bulls Arena.
It marked the first time that England has beaten the United States since a friendly in 2011. It was only England’s fourth win in 14 games (4-9-1) against the U.S.
White entered in the 76th minute.
BUDEN BENCHED
Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer has been suspended one game without pay by the NBA for making contact with a referee.
Budenholzer was yelling at Brian Forte from behind with 2:42 remaining in the third quarter when he bumped into the referee during the Hawks’ 135-130 loss to Cleveland on Friday night. It was the second time Budenholzer has done that; the other was also in a game against Cleveland on Nov. 21, 2015.
FOUL PLAY
San Francisco Giants coach Jose Alguacil needed surgery to repair a broken nose after being hit by a foul ball during a spring training game.
Alguacil was hit in the face and fell to the ground. He was sitting in a folding chair outside the dugout, and manager Bruce Bochy said the Giants’ new first base coach said he felt fine.
